[Henry stands from his desk, gives a couple of passing words to the Joy at the other side of the desk, and ducks into the back where all the equipment and overnight kennels are. There, he crouches down and aims the 'gear at a pile of fat sleepy baby Nidorans.]
They just hatched tonight. They don't even know what grass is.
Right. And some days, trainers need to go somewhere on short notice. They'll usually leave a flamebody Pokemon with us and we'll take shifts in walking with them. Sometimes we just end up with a surprise. We haven't kept a Null yet though. They're all so different.
[Henry says this a little firmly. He knows Heather isn't going to walk in the door and plop Snitter into his lap, but he is...concerned. He wasn't usually the type to attack other men with his teeth and nails. He's just not sure what's going to happen when he's in the same room with this unnatural disco robo dog.]
[She doesn't remember exactly when the Lapras hatched, only that most of the time she's been home over the summer, the most she'd seen of Flotsam had been a lot of happy splashing out in the pool.]
[Background noise of a busy Pokemon Center meets Walter's ear before Henry's voice does. He's taken a moment to not fly into fight or flight mode in the middle of his break.]
I won't bring Assumption, and your friends can be present.
[ Clearly this is an issue of trust and that Walter and/or his Pokemon will kill him. Which was understandable enough, and he wasn't going to hold it against Henry. ]
[ There's a pause before Walter speaks again. The background noise, crunching of leaves, wind and rustling, gave away that he was outside, walking somewhere. There's some kind of Pokemon walking with him, padding along on four feet. ]
I did not challenge you because I wanted to see you, Henry.
...You have been here six years longer than I have. I have defeated the eight Gym Leaders of Johto, but it's not enough. I need to check how strong my Pokemon are, compared to someone who has been here for so long.
[Henry can't help an ugly, genuinely amused snort at Walter's response.]
Okay, that's fair. But...the answer is still no. Both because I just don't want to and I'm trying to get better at sticking up for myself--not letting myself bend just because it's what someone else wants--and because you would probably walk away disappointed.
[ His Pokemon aren't weak. But there's another pause as he considers what else Henry as said. A soft rumble comes from the Luxray at his side, both angry that this person thought he could beat her without a problem, and curious. ]
